Stephen Smith Lowther Crofton correspondence relating to the British Navy's suppression of the Brazilian slave trade, 1849.

LS to Lieutenant Crofton from Commodore Thomas Herbert, Commander-in-Chief, south east coast of America, dated 1849 Apr 25, enclosing a manuscript copy of a confidential letter from James Hudson, secretary of legation to Rio de Janeiro. The enclosure references a dispatch from Viscount Palmerston directing Hudson to reach an agreement with the Brazilian government permitting British ships that have captured Brazilian slave ships to obtain assistance and supplies in Brazilian ports. Hudson relates his failure to achieve an accord with the Brazilian government, who view the seizure of slave vessels as illegal, and warns British naval officers to consider Brazilian ports as hostile. LS to Lieutenant Crofton from Rear Admiral Barrington Reynolds, Commander-in-Chief, south east coast of America, dated 1849 Nov 8, enclosing a manuscript copy of a letter, dated 1849 Sep 4, from Henry Unwin Addington, Britain's under-secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Addington's letter clarifies the right of "Her Majesty's Cruisers employed in the suppression of the slave trade to seize steam vessels engaged in towing vessels liable to seizure for being concerned in that trade."
